Melody A. Johnson
Melody has been an actor, improviser, writer and director in the Canadian Theatre scene for over twenty years. As an actor Melody has originated many favourite roles in the Canadian theatre canon such as the title role of Mercy, in Little Mercy's First Murder by Morwyn Brebner, (Dora Award, Tarragon Theatre/Shaw Festival, directed by Eda Holmes), Sugar, in Trout Stanley by Claudia Dey,(Factory Theatre), and Olive/Eva in Jason Sherman's hit play It's All True (Tarragon/Necessary Angel Theatre). Other favourite credits include Morris Panych's 7 Stories, (Theatre Calgary / Canadian Stage), Our Town (Two Planks and a Passion Theatre), and Blithe Spirit (Soulpepper). As an alumna of the Toronto Second City mainstage (1996-present), she has directed the National Touring Company and three mainstage revues, in addition to serving as dramaturge of the Chicago Second City hit #DateMe. Stand out comedic acting turns include An Awkward Evening with Martin & Johnson (Tarragon Theatre) with fellow SC alumnus Bob Martin (The Drowsy Chaperone). As a playwright Melody co created the musical Mimi, for Tarragon Theatre and continues to tour the self penned, two time Dora nominated Miss Caledonia. Melody is the recipient of ten Dora Mavor Moore Award nominations in addition to the east coast Robert Merit Award and the west coast Betty Mitchell Award. In February of 2016 Melody directed the musical improvisational show One Night Only winning the Dora - NOW Audience Choice Award. Melody can be seen in the soon to be released film Ordinary Days and will be debuting a new play entitled Person of Interest in the summer of 2017.
